An English-speaking night under the stars
Stargazing near Grenoble, fully guided in English
Astro-Grenoble runs an English-language astronomy experience for international residents and visitors. The Friday Stargazing Night takes place at Col de Porte in Chartreuse, around 30 minutes from Grenoble, with sky orientation, constellation reading and guided telescope observing.
- Live explanations in English
- Friday nights outside new moon dates
- 10:00 PM to midnight

The experience
More than looking through a telescope
The session starts with the whole sky. You learn how to identify bright stars, follow the basic shapes of constellations and use them as landmarks. The aim is to give you a method you can use again, rather than a list of names to memorise.
Telescope observing comes next. The targets depend on the date, the Moon, the position of the planets and the quality of the atmosphere. A planet, a lunar landscape or a star cluster may be available, but no specific object is guaranteed before the actual sky conditions are known.
Clear English guidance
The astronomy content and live explanations are delivered in English throughout the Stargazing Night.
No previous knowledge required
The session is designed for beginners as well as curious visitors who already know a little about the night sky.
A small group
Each session is limited to a maximum of ten participants, leaving room for questions and telescope time.
For international visitors
A different thing to do in Grenoble at night
The experience combines Grenoble’s mountain setting with its connection to astrophysics. Your guide is a research engineer at the Grenoble Institute of Planetology and Astrophysics and has completed three seasons of science outreach at the Centre Astro in Saint-Michel-l’Observatoire.
Instead of staying in the city centre, you travel into Chartreuse after dark and experience the sky from a site with fewer immediate urban lights. This is an outdoor mountain activity, not an indoor planetarium show.
